I will be the first to admit I don’t know much about Queens. I’ve ventured into Astoria for sushi, contemplated a visit to Long Island City to see the skyline but that’s where it ended. That changed recently when I visited Rockaway Beach, one of the best beaches in the city according to CBS New York.
If you’re going by train you have to get on the Hell Train also known as the A train and then a bus to get the beach. Since I have no time for that $#!& especially during the weekend I drove. The parking lots were full as expected but I did find a parking spot a few blocks away from the from the beach but directly across the street from the PJs. A parking space is a parking space though and my begging arse couldn’t be choosy. Besides I didn’t want to find another spot anyway.
The beach was active but not swarming with people. As much as I enjoy the scene at Coney Island, it is hectic. Families were out, couples were together trying to cool off on what was a very hot day, and tons of single people biking, skateboarding, or strolling the boardwalk.
This area was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The original wooden boardwalk was washed away. Now there is a concrete boardwalkwith wavy designs.
There were a handful of restaurants near the beach but I didn’t have the opportunity to try any. I hope to make a return visit before the end of August to try one of them out.
